It is often red or pink at first and may react differently from the surrounding skin. Ultraviolet radiation stimulates melanin production and can contribute to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation: the mark becomes a more noticeable brown color that can sometimes persist for a long time.

Sun protection is particularly helpful in reducing this color difference. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum sunscreen on healed scars to reduce red or brown discoloration. However, it would be an overstatement to say that a single exposure alone makes a scar hypertrophic or necessarily disrupts healing: tension, location, genetics, infection, and other factors also affect the outcome.

Darker skin types are more prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. For facial scars or very exposed areas, a tinted sunscreen containing iron oxides may be considered because visible light can also contribute to pigmentation in some skin types. This is an additional, individualized measure, not a requirement for every scar. AAD information about UVA, visible light, and sun protection.

Color is a useful clinical clue.
